Shiner Dun It

                    REGISTRATION

Due to his perlino color, Shiner is not registerable with NFQHA however, we did have the association check his bloodlines and he is 83.789% foundation bred, so in order for your foal to be registerable with NFQHA, your mare needs to be at least 76.2% foundation.  He is registered AQHA (reg # 4327529) and as a breeding stock paint with APHA (reg # 686572).

SHINER IS BREEDERS SWEEPSTAKES NOMINATED!

                   COLOR GENETICS

Shiner is a perlino, so he will always produce palominos or buckskins when bred to non-grey mares without a cream gene (i.e. chestnuts, sorrels, bays & blacks).  Shiner carries two dominant Agouti genes and therefore he cannot produce a smokey cream or a smokey black foal.  This is a highly sought after trait in a double dilute and we are excited to now know this about Shiner!  Finally, Shiner will produce more buckskins than palominos.  Please see the probabilities below:

Chestnut/Sorrel mare:  50% Palomino, 50% Buckskin

Bay mare:  12.5% Palomino, 87.5% Buckskin

Black mare:  12.5% Palomino, 87.5% Buckskin

To see these results for yourself and/or if your mare has another coat pattern (i.e. roaning, sabino, etc.) please go to the Animal Genetics Coat Color Calculator and follow the directions below:

1.  Next to the word "Sire" in the first drop down box, select the color "Perlino" and leave the second drop down box on "Solid"

2.  Next to the word "Dam" in the first drop down box, select the color of your mare (be sure to read all the way through the list and be as accurate as possible) and, should your mare have a coat color pattern (i.e. overo, sabino, tobiano, etc.) be sure to select that in the second drop down box.  Click on "Continue"

3.  A new window will pop up.  In that window, in the "Sire" box, for the "Red Factor", please select "Red Carrier (Ee)" and under "Agouti", please select "Homozygous Agouti (AA)".

4.  In the "Dam" box, if you know your mare's Agouti and Silver Dilution genetics, please enter the information there.  If not, leave them as "unknown" and click on "Calculate".

5.  In the next window that pops up, you will see the coat color possibilities of your foal and the percentages of those possibilities.

                 BREEDING RESEARCH

Research has proven that the female chromosom (X) has particular recessive genes that can produce physical characteristics that result in exceptional performance.  Recessive genes only become apparent if they are inherited from both the sire AND the dam and only if the genes themselves are passed along in a certain way; from mother to son, mother to daughter or father to daughter.  X Chromosomes CANNOT be passed from father to son*.  Athletic talent and the ability to win can be traced through the female X chromosome a/k/a the "X Factor".  This is why "the tail female line" in a horse's pedigree is so important.  Therefore, a broodmare's sire is the key in successful breeding programs and maternal ancestry may be more important than the paternal side of a horse's pedigree.

*A foal's sex is established based on the chromosomes in the sperm.  A stallion may pass on either an X or a Y chromosome, while a mare can only pass on an X chromosome.  Two X chromosomes (one from each parent) result in a filly, but an X and a Y chromosome (the Y coming from the stallion) can only result in a colt.  See the table below:
